Children with Autism by Marcos Chin
this is far too true…i wish other people had the capacity to understand children with Autism, and what their thought processes and daily interactions are like. maybe then, they would be more patient and understanding. through working with my little summer campers who had various forms of Autism, i have learned SO much. they taught me how beautiful and simple the world can be. loving and accepting and exploring comes so easily to them. i’ve learned how much better it is to be supportive and guide them through life, and do what’s necessary to protect them from the things they might not be able to understand…than it is to try and “fix them”.
we are greatly disadvantaging this population when we view their behaviors and tendencies as problematic from the moment traces of Autism are recognized. if only we accepted their uniqueness and gave them everything they needed to foster individuality, and encouraged their amazing ways of thinking (my kids would fixate on certain subjects..they are incredibly intelligent) …instead of constantly trying to come up with plans to “normalize” them we might finally create new possibilities for understanding them, and all of the wonderful things about them that make them special.
these views reflect my own personal opinions based on years of experience and interest, are in no way intended to offend. i’m always open to the ideas of others, and welcome any feedback and thoughts, any time.
